Project Overview

Cosford Cinema is the University of Miami School of Communication's cinema. This project was special because it meant contributing to a popular institution and building a legacy in a field I'm passionate about: filmmaking. I worked on the existing WordPress site, built on the Avada theme and The Events Calendar, to update how screenings and events are presented.

Key Features

  1. Local Development Setup: Deployed the WordPress CMS locally to develop and test changes safely before they went live.
  2. Custom Event Templates: Overrode The Events Calendar's single-event template so each screening page shows a clean, content-focused layout.
  3. Theme & Plugin Refactoring: Rewrote PHP files and functions to change the data shown in different event views and adapt the front-end design.
  4. Brand Styling: Built a child theme to apply Cosford's brand accents without modifying the parent theme.

Technologies Used

  • WordPress: Content management for the cinema's pages and programming.
  • Avada Theme & Builder: The existing theme, extended through a child theme.
  • The Events Calendar Pro: Screening and event scheduling.
  • PHP & CSS: Template overrides and custom styling.

Results

The screening pages now present each film with a focused, on-brand layout, and the update-safe child theme structure means future theme and plugin updates won't overwrite the customizations.
